Everything we see in Walt Disney World is often thought to be created solely by The Walt Disney Company. However, that statement is not entirely accurate when it comes to certain attractions! One well-known example is Fantasyland’s carousel at Walt Disney World, which is currently called the Prince Charming Regal Carrousel. This enchanting merry-go-round adds charm and magic to Fantasyland, inviting guests to experience a piece of whimsy as they enter this classic area of the park.

As we step into Fantasyland through Cinderella Castle, the sound of beloved Disney tunes wafts through the air. The melodies, which play from the carousel in a nostalgic organ style, help set the mood for your experience. It is a warm, inviting atmosphere that transports everyone to a world of fantasy and imagination, where dreams come alive.

Not only is Fantasyland’s carousel a cherished original attraction at Magic Kingdom, having been part of the park since its opening in 1971, but its history also stretches back even further. This carousel originally made its debut at the 1917 New York World’s Fair, long before the birth of Mickey Mouse. This rich history adds an intriguing layer to the attraction’s charm, reminding us that the magic of Disney is not only about the characters and stories we know and love, but also about the timeless experiences cherished by generations of guests.

While The Walt Disney Company has indeed created a vast and wondrous world, attractions like Fantasyland’s carousel remind us that the magic often has deeper roots, intertwining history with the fantastical experiences that define Disney parks today.

Fantasyland’s carousel we see today in the Magic Kingdom has a fascinating and intricate history that dates back over a century. Originally built in 1917 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, the carousel made its debut at the Detroit Palace Garden Park, where it delighted visitors until it ceased operations there in 1928. At this time, it was known as the Liberty Carousel.

After its run in Detroit, the carousel returned to Philadelphia for much-needed repairs. However, it soon found a new home at Olympic Park in Maplewood, New Jersey, where it would delight guests for another 37 years. Throughout this time, the Liberty Carousel became a beloved attraction, drawing families from the surrounding areas who cherished the joyful experience of riding the beautifully crafted horses and enjoying the enchanting music that accompanied the ride.

Unfortunately, by the time Olympic Park closed its doors for good in 1965, the future Magic Kingdom carousel was in dire condition. Decades of use had taken a toll, leaving the carousel in need of significant repairs that could not be overlooked. The structure was in such bad shape that it faced the threat of destruction if there was no one willing to step forward and invest in restoring it. While the intricately carved and painted horses could have been sold easily in that market, the fate of the carousel’s overall structure remained uncertain. Without intervention, it seemed likely that the charm and history of the Liberty Carousel would be lost forever.

In 1967, something truly magical happened! The Walt Disney Company recognized the historical significance of an old carousel and decided to acquire and restore it. This classic carousel eventually became a centerpiece in Fantasyland, perfectly timed for the grand opening of Walt Disney World in 1971.

Originally, the carousel featured 72 beautifully crafted horses, each with its own unique design and charm. However, to enhance the experience for guests, an additional 18 horses were added, bringing the total to an impressive 90 horses.
