Imagineer Scott Girard’s Magic Journey: Working For Disney and Meeting Walt Disney
Growing up just blocks from Disneyland in Anaheim, future Imagineer Scott Girard was deeply intertwined with the magic of Disney. As a young kid, he marveled at the construction of Disneyland, riding his bike past the building site and watching as dirt was moved and trees were relocated. This early exposure planted a seed that would eventually grow into a lifelong career.
Scott’s first job was working on the Disneyland monorail and steam trains. One vivid memory involves Walt Disney stopping Scott in Town Square, complimenting him on his work with the steam trains, and asking about his background. Walt’s genuine interest extended beyond professional matters; he took the time to inquire about Scott’s college studies, offering advice and mentioning connections such as Bill Evans, the prominent landscape architect at Disney at the time.
This personal connection exemplified Walt Disney’s hands-on leadership style. He invested time in the details, even in staff interactions, which fostered a tone of dedication among everyone involved in creating the magic.
Building Magic: The Art and Science of Disney Parks Landscape Design
Transforming a vast construction site into a lush, welcoming park is no small feat. Imagineer Scott Girard’s journey from Disneyland Cast Member to Walt Disney World landscape architect involved unique challenges and innovative solutions.
When creating Walt Disney World, timing was critical. Landscaping needed to be completed quickly and accurately, with limited time before the Vacation Kingdom of the World opened. For instance, in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, landscaping was finished just 10 months before the grand opening; a remarkable achievement that required around-the-clock work and meticulous planning.

One notable story involves the transportation and planting of the massive Liberty Oak, a 125-year-old oak tree from the nearby pasture. This process included root pruning, careful lifting using custom-developed techniques with steel pins, and years of nurturing to ensure the tree survived the move and thrived in its new location in Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom.

Scott’s detailed account of the Liberty Oak demonstrates how Disney’s landscape team went beyond typical planting practices. They rooted and prepared the tree for years, lifted it with specialized equipment, transported it across the site, and even grafted smaller branches onto it to compensate for root damage. This multi-year commitment emphasizes that Disney parks are not just built; they are cultivated and deeply cared for.

The Florida climate, characterized by high humidity, frequent rains, and diverse pests, presented unique challenges. Scott recalls working through humid summers, coordinating with pest control crews, and navigating terrain that was initially swampy or sandy. The team’s approach to environmental challenges was highly innovative, aimed at creating the most effective planned urban environment on the planet.
The Power of Detail: How Subtle Elements Shaped the Park Experience
Disney’s attention to detail creates immersive environments that still amaze guests to this day. Imagineer Scott Girard highlighted several impactful design choices. One notable example is the planter designed to resemble the Horizons Pavilion at Epcot. Today, this subtle detail evokes nostalgia and connects visitors to Epcot’s history. Such elements showcase the careful planning by landscape architects, ensuring that every aspect of the environment enhances storytelling.

Additionally, the thoughtfully selected plant palette differentiates the themes of various pavilions. For instance, water-inspired curves are used near The Land and The Living Seas pavilions in Future World West, while straight-line patterns are found near Horizons and World of Motion in Future World East. These details serve as reminders of the human effort and craftsmanship involved in creating a seamless illusion of magic, making the guest experience more memorable.

Imagineer Scott Girard’s stories remind us that Disney parks are more than just rides and attractions; they are narratives shaped by careful planning, artistic vision, and an unwavering attention to detail. The landscapes are not only visually appealing but also convey stories rooted in history, culture, and innovation. These efforts go beyond appearances; they include thoughtful environmental management, preservation, and sustainability, often unnoticed by guests but crucial for maintaining the magic year after year.
I want to thank Imagineer Scott Girard for joining me on the podcast and sharing his invaluable insights into the world of the Disney park landscape design. His stories and experiences have provided a unique glimpse into the meticulous planning and creativity that go into crafting the magical environments and landscapes we all cherish at the Disney parks.
